An analysis of fediverse backend hosting providers finds Germany-based Hetzner hosts 51% of the network by number of active users, followed by France-based OVH

Great analysis! Max Schleiffer / @maxschleiffer@mastodon.social : Where is the whole fediverse hosted?  Spoiler: a lot on OVH, but Hetzner seems to win, even if you exclude the active users of the largest instance mastodon.social (which is also hosted by Hetzner). https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/... @jwz@mastodon.social : @anildash Given the current Substack implosion, it's disappointing to see so many people still giving Cloudflare money.  A company who's position on Nazis is basically: “We would gleefully do business with ISIS if we were not legally prohibited from doing so”. KuJoe / @KuJoe@mindly.social : @benjojo This was an awesome post!  I loved that over 30% of instances behind Cloudflare are self-hosted at home.  —  Mindly.Social does fit into that larger percentage of users hosted at Hetzner, but that changes tomorrow once I migrate to our new host so the timing of this article is great because I'm glad to see I'm reducing the number of users hosted on a single host. … Anil Dash / @anildash@me.dm : Really pleased to see this post outlining how @devs helps deliver more of the fediverse than any other platform.  And the majority of that is done for free, as part of our Fast Forward program for supporting open source and the open web. … @jcrabapple@dmv.community : Where is all of the fediverse?  —  “For instances using Cloudflare, about 30% appear hosted on residential connections.  Overall, Hetzner hosts over 51% of fediverse users, largely due to the large Mastodon.social instance.”  —  https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/...
