These are NOT meaningful redlines.  For example it only prohibits autonomous weapons “ in any case where law, regulation, or Department policy requires human control.”  But the relevant safeguard against autonomous weapons is a DOD directive that Hegseth can change at will! openai.com/index/our-ag...

So much for the face-saving climb down.  The silver lining, such as it is, is that, unlike the DPA, where the government has a reasonable case, the case for supply chain risk is extremely tenuous.  Anthropic will sue and I expect this to be quickly enjoined by the courts. x.com/SecWar/statu...

One of the (many) frustrations about the TikTok “deal” is that, because its details likely won't be made public, we won't know if it actually satisfies the law.  And because of who Trump is, we can't trust his certification to Congress that the divestment is valid. www.semafor.com/article/01/2...

Everything hinges on what this means.  The law prohibits “any cooperation with respect to the operation of a content recommendation algorithm” with ByteDance.  But it's possible that licensing technology is ok if the algorithm is fully recreated by a new U.S. TikTok. www.wsj.com/tech/details... …

Well this will be impossible to operationalize.  Also, pretty clearly a First Amendment violation, since it's conditioning federal contracts on speech that is unrelated to the contract performance. www.wsj.com/tech/ai/whit...  [image]

Sources: the White House is preparing an EO requiring AI companies with federal contracts to be neutral and unbiased, to combat what officials see as “woke AI”

The order would be one of several expected to be released outlining the president's vision for winning the AI race with China

(This is obviously nonsense—there's clearly been a violation of the statute—but this might be an important defense for the companies if Trump or a later administration retroactively tries to punish them for this.)

Trump signs an EO seeking to pause the TikTok ban for 75 days, in a bid to give him time to negotiate a resolution and protect TikTok's providers from liability

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday seeking to hit pause on a law banning TikTok and to provide a liability shield …

Importantly, this E.O. just boils down to a promise of non-enforcement.  It's not the 90 day extension that the statute provides for in certain circumstances, which if Trump had tried to do would have actually immunized the providers for 90 days.

Unfortunately for the companies, the usual boilerplate that EOs end with is also here, which undermines the promise of a liability shield.  [image]
