This will probably get settled; Reddit just suing to increase the pressure? The AI companies, including Anthropic, don't want to set a new precedent that they must respect Terms of Service... Prior claims (e.g. Genius v Google) were deemed to be preempted by © law and dismissed.

Reddit sues Anthropic, alleging it accessed Reddit 100K+ times after saying it had stopped; Reddit has reached user data licensing deals with OpenAI and Google

For a while it looked like Reddit was going to build a big business selling access to user data to LLM companies but besides Google they didn't get many takers it seems.  —  So her...

This removes the option of Stability settling the lawsuit with a partnership + licensing deal. That option was always on the table... But the fact one CEO failed to grab the opportunity, and another stole it from under their nose is not a good sign for Stability's future.

USCA acknowledged his visual edits met the bar for Copyright registration, but he wanted Copyright registration for the whole work including what Midjourney did. At the same time, he stubbornly refused to specify exactly what he edited — thus nothing could be granted to him. [image]

Interesting part about the AudioCraft and MusicCraft datasets is that they are specifically sourced and licensed — rather than “don't tell anyone” web-scale scraped. See Model cards for links: https://audiocraft.metademolab.com/ [image]

This ridiculous argument would never fly in the EU under the Copyright directive. You have to respect the Terms Of Service for opt-out, and continue to respect the conditions imposed throughout product lifecycle. https://arstechnica.com/...

Lending credibility to the hypothesis that OpenAI is not a business nor a non-profit, as it does neither. It's a project secretly funded by evil billionaires to destroy society as we know it—whatever the cost. They hired Altman to play puppet CEO role. (Oh wait! Wrong meeting.) https://twitter.com/...

Interesting take by @technollama that OpenAI's secrecy around GPT-4 is a legal defense. Since it's a multimedia model, it could well be! Also, if it's true they're keeping things secret for legal reasons, it's a sign they know they're non-compliant and have no good defense ;-) https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Microsoft won't take Bing Chat down. The saw how ChatGPT succeeded and Galactica did not. It's a good move, business-wise! They're branding it as a continual learning experience, and ignoring any of the problems: https://blogs.bing.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Chatting with Bing Chat, codenamed Sydney and sometimes Riley, feels like crossing the Rubicon because the AI is attempting to communicate emotions, not facts

Look, this is going to sound crazy.  But know this: I would not be talking about Bing Chat for the fourth day in a row if I didn't really, really, think it was worth it.

Can we just take a bit of time to fully dismantle this argument? It's a straw-man. Emad tries to justify violating the consent of artists and creators worldwide by virtue signalling.
