Via @gruber.foo, @mgsiegler.com speculates that Anthropic is pulling up a drawbridge on its competitors.  IMO, this is half-right: Anthropic is one of few who can afford to pay, and an appeal *could* have yielded broad fair use precedent.  But Anthropic doesn't entirely control the bridge...

There are three AI/© truisms, of which ignorance of any one will start a fight:  —  (1) There are some copyright-relevant events in the AI supply chain.  —  (2) Copyright is not an all-purpose AI policy regime.  —  (3) Copyright is the ~only hard-law AI regulation that will exist in the U.S. in the near future. …

I think the press (and the market) would have absolutely piled on the “Apple's behind on AI” narrative for the entirety of the last year if it had given this exact interview last summer instead of announcing a bunch of AI features (which may never ship) to feed the hype beast.

A straight-ticket loss for the AI companies.  Also, the “Pre-Publication” status is very strange and conspicuously timed relative to the firing of the Librarian of Congress.  I continue to wonder (speculatively!) if a purge at the Copyright Office is incoming and they felt the need to rush this out. …
