All CEOs (and Executive Directors) should eventually step down. 10 years is a good bar. This is the right move. https://twitter.com/...

Signal CEO Moxie Marlinspike steps down; WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton will act as the interim CEO as the search for a permanent replacement begins

It's a new year, and I've decided it's a good time to replace myself as the CEO of Signal.  —  I have now been working on Signal for almost a decade.

@bpagelsminor She's publicly repeated talking points that governments have been using to say encryption is bad for years, at a time when encryption is under attack. I'm sure she knows how much impact her words have. Encryption is nuanced- interviews with press are not. It's irresponsible.

Frances Haugen told UK MPs that Facebook is “unquestionably making hate worse”, and warns that Instagram is “more dangerous than other forms of social media”

@tdietterich With power comes responsibility, simple as that. I disagree that it's very hard to figure out what has come before you. In fact, from her position at FB she ought to be aware of the reams of work I'm referring to. Also, her career is far from over. She's been praised by Senators.

I beg whistleblowers that are going to offer their own solutions instead of just sharing info: pay attention to all the activists and civil society that have come before you. I BEG you, read the extensive recs that have already been written in academic papers, blog posts, etc...

This is bad. For all the reasons in the thread, AND This tool won't be contained to child sexual abuse material. Tools developed to fight it are often inappropriately redeployed to try to detect “terrorist content”- regardless of false positives. https://mnemonic.org/... (1/2) https://twitter.com/...

BTW, the wording of this report is so careful and non-commital that it's exhausting to read. “Our teams will test the impact of telling people whether their content was actioned by automation or manual review.” no, seriously, just tell us.

Facebook publishes its first quarterly Oversight Board update, noting it fully or partially implemented 14 of 18 board recommendations across 6 cases in Q1 2021

When we launched the Oversight Board, we committed to consider and transparently respond to all of the board's recommendations.

What's more, it's not only everyday users who need this information. Policymakers who are pushing the use of automation, frankly, by and large do not understand it. Without better info, they never will. (9/)

Facebook says it is running a test to assess the impact of letting users know when their post was removed as a result of automation

Karissa Bell / Engadget :

I needed coffee too, especially as I read this, and wondered why this kind of basic information hasn't been more accessible for the last several years as FB ramped up use of automation (5/): https://twitter.com/...

Facebook says it is running a test to assess the impact of letting users know when their post was removed as a result of automation

Karissa Bell / Engadget :

FB has a lot to say about not wanting to confuse people by providing too much information about its use of automation. This is frustrating for so many reasons, not limited to the fact that people can and do learn very quickly. FB simply hasn't given users the agency to do so (8/)

Karissa Bell / Engadget :

Speaking of the principles, the next rec is to always have human appeal available. FB only commits to “assessing the balance” between human and automated appeals. Yet FB blamed automation for myriad errors at the beginning of COVID-19. (7/)

Karissa Bell / Engadget :

I don't buy Facebook's vague explanation of risk when it comes to the Dangerous Orgs and Individuals list, and with regards to safety threats to staff, as I've said before: if you can't operate safely in a market, you might have to leave it (14/)
