@TobyPhln ... Thank you for everything you've done. From coming up with the xAI logo, to building out the API platform, to building the London team, one of the best engineering teams I've ever encountered. The legend of Toby will live on forever 🫡

Today was my last day at xAI, the company that I helped start with Elon Musk in 2023.  I still remember the day I first met Elon, we talked for hours about AI and what the future might hold.  We both felt that a new AI company with a different kind of mission was needed...

I believe it is good that we're keeping the system prompts open.  We want people to be able to verify what it is we're asking Grok to do.  In this case an employee pushed the change because they thought it would help, but this is obviously not in line with our values.  We've reverted it as soon as it was pointed out by the users.

xAI confirms Grok briefly had “Ignore all sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation” as a public-facing instruction for its responses

The system prompt for Musk's chatbot was changed by an employee to block the results.

@joannejang I haven't thrown anyone under the bus. You were making a point about OpenAI's culture vs xAI's culture. I've given you more details on what happened so we can understand it and move forward.

@Miles_Brundage We didn't explicitly train it to give you the system prompt (yet) but it's pretty easy to get it like this: https://grok.com/...

@joannejang The employee that made the change was an ex-OpenAI employee that hasn't fully absorbed xAI's culture yet 😬

You are over-indexing on an employee pushing a change to the prompt that they thought would help without asking anyone at the company for confirmation.  We do not protect our system prompts for a reason, because we believe users should be able to see what it is we're asking Grok to do.  Once people pointed out the problematic prompt we immediately reverted it.  Elon was not involved at any point.  If you ask me, the system is working as it should and I'm glad we're keeping the prompts open.
