So, re: Applovin short report: 1.  People at Meta and Google are now aware of some of these practices**.  I don't know about Apple.  2. Fair to say that big tech companies somewhat discount short seller research, but they do NOT ignore it. …

Most folks don't appreciate this about the EU Digital Markets Act, which is that it requires interoperability to an extent we've never ever seen before.  I expect a lot of big fights about this in 2025 between the tech giants.  🍿

Apple says Meta has made 15 interoperability requests under the EU's DMA, more than any other company, and that these could affect users' privacy and security

Apple (AAPL.O) on Wednesday hit out at Meta Platforms (META.O), saying its numerous requests to access the iPhone maker's software tools …

1) some of the DMA is good (25%?)  2) a lot of it is silly (eg forcing companies to provide products for free?)  3) I find it sad that these tech companies are probably spending a lot of their resources on some version of “compliance” for a subset of users vs improving their products for everyone globally; BUT ALSO 4) I'm not sure how much they'd do the good things without a forcing function thanks to mostly absent or ineffectual US regulation

It's easy to stop displaying 1st party info if a user toggles an opt-out; much harder will be figuring out how to remove that data later after it's been sold off to train some other company's AI system.  “Automattic did not respond to a question from 404 Media about whether it could guarantee that people who opt out will have their data deleted retroactively.” …

The correct take by @dwillner.  Google execs are rushing to market, teams skipping steps/lacking support in 🔑 areas: “..much more nuance will be needed to both accurately depict history (with all of its warts) and to accurately depict the present (in which all CEOs are not white men and all airline stewards are not Asian women),” he told me. …

Google says poor image tuning and Gemini becoming more cautious than intended made the model “overcompensate in some cases, and be over-conservative in others”

Google announced yesterday that it disabled image generation of people in Gemini following criticism about its historical accuracy.

Yes.  Also the same thing re: zone of “plausible deniability” for any ads businesses, not just for apps but a whole host of products and services that many interests argue shouldn't be promoted to kids (eg soda/fast food).  Hence they will not do this willingly - but one could argue they should.
