I suspect there's also a global legal liability issue here.  But it does also feel like Anthropic is trying to save the DoD from itself - or at least from Secretary Hegseth - here.  The tech is simply not even close to ready to be deployed in this way.  [embedded post]

President Trump calls Anthropic a “radical left, woke company” and says he is directing every federal agency in the US to stop using its products

The Trump administration has decided to blacklist Anthropic in the most consequential and controversial policy decision to date …

Dario Amodei says Anthropic cannot “in good conscience” accede to DOD's request to remove safeguards and will work to ensure a smooth transition if offboarded

I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries.

I am extremely confused as to why the UK government and police are saying Grok's mass-scale CSAM generation is an issue for Ofcom.  —  This isn't about X failing to moderate CSAM, which is an Online Safety Act issue.  It is about the company and its technology being actively involved in its generation.

This is a characteristically good (and troubling) article, but the headline really jars for me.  Ross Ulbricht isn't best known as a “cypto overlord”.  He's a drug kingpin: he enabled the sale of around $1.2bn of drugs globally.  —  That's what makes a pardon from Trump so bizarre.  [embedded post]

Sam Altman posted this essay in the last hour.  I'm someone who believes AI is a genuinely transformative technology - at least the biggest since the internet.  —  But I read this and it just comes across as either delusional or a bizarre, fantastical sales pitch.  I can't work out which is worse.

Sam Altman says “intelligence and energy”, the “limiters on human progress”, will be abundant in the 2030s, and superintelligence should be widely distributed

We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started.  Humanity is close to building digital superintelligence …

Meta required a public statesman like Nick Clegg after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but now turns to the in-house Republican Joel Kaplan to appease Trump

The former UK politician was a public statesman when Meta required one.  A different approach will be called for under Trump.
