Video presenter updates: Overlay looks very cool. I mean it's hard to make video calls less bad but this seems like a real improvement. Even works in zoom and webex and MS teams. #WWDC23 [image]

Arguably the bigger news is that Apple refreshed the 4K Apple TV and lowered the price to $129 for the WiFi-only version (Ethernet and double storage is $20 more) https://www.apple.com/...

@stephenrobles Hear me out - if they HAD released a new Apple Pencil version maybe they could have moved the camera to the long side of the Pro versions. iPad gets the new camera placement because it still only supports the 1st gen Pencil (and you now need an adapter to charge it, which wtf?)

Apple's 10th-gen iPad comes with USB-C instead of Lightning and Apple is selling a $9 adapter to charge and pair the supported 1st-gen Apple Pencil

@stephenrobles Just make the Apple Pencil capable of charging on a MagSafe puck and be done with it. Seriously - that's the reason we still have to deal with the camera in the wrong place! That's a really poor trade off.

And, when I say “bigger” news, I mean that Apple rarely makes a product better and lowers the price by that much. It appears that Apple still wants to seriously compete in the “device that connects to your TV” market, which wasn't always obvious before.

Curious about this take @gruber. Doesn't Apple's IRP already do exactly this? This program doesn't make tools/parts/manuals more accessible to those independent shops - they already had it. That was in 2019: https://www.inc.com/... Maybe I misunderstand this sentence. https://twitter.com/...

On the chance it could be forced to expand the scope of the feature: “We have faced demands to build and deploy government-mandated changes that degrade the privacy of users before, and have steadfastly refused those demands. We will continue to refuse them in the future.”

On why Apple is doing this: “In most countries, including the United States, simply possessing these images is a crime and Apple is obligated to report any instances we learn of to the appropriate authorities.”

That's the most explicit Apple has been on the record that if you turn off uploading to iCloud Photos, CSAM detection doesn't happen. Apple wants to be clear it isn't “scanning” your photo library on your device.

Apple also says that it won't add images hashes to the database, they have to come from NCMEC: “[hashes] are from known, existing images of CSAM that have been acquired and validated by child safety organizations. Apple does not add to the set of known CSAM image hashes.”
