I'm pretty sure that Lip Bu Tan, and funds he led, have invested in more US semis start ups over the past ten years than all other US institutional VCs combined. Single handedly propped up the whole complex.

Noteworthy in Intel's discussion of PC CPUs at their analyst event today they benchmarked against both AMD and QCOM. We have been pretty skeptical about QCOM's chances in this market, but Intel has now convinced us to take QCOM more seriously here.
