Meta paying up for OpenAI engs is fascinating. Founders get questions like “what if Google copies you?” or “what if they offer your key eng $5m?” These used to be hypothetical. Now Meta might be starting a trend where big co's recognize that some hires are literally priceless.

I read the news that Sam Altman is joining Microsoft, and the first thing I thought about is Paul Graham's description of Sam: “You could parachute him into an island full of cannibals and come back in 5 years and he'd be the king.” So basically 5 years until he's CEO?

Amazon is announcing a layoff where employees will know if they're impacted in 3-5 weeks. What's the logic behind a move like this? Would this needlessly increase anxiety and hurt morale? I agree and I think that's part of the issue. Because it's investor tweets, people perceive this as privileged vs underprivileged, elite/wealthy vs everyone else, etc. But the underlying message is more about logic about how people behave vs emotions about how we wish they would.
