The bad things I'm worried about as Twitter implodes don't involve spectaular interruptions of service (though that will suck), but quiet data breaches and account compromises.

Sources: Twitter disables badge access and shuts down offices until at least November 21; a report points to fears of “sabotage” after numerous resignations

Sources: some internal estimates show 1,200+ full-time Twitter employees resigned on November 17; Twitter previously laid off ~3,700 of 7,500 staff

Mr. Musk sent emails on Friday asking to learn about Twitter's underlying technology as key infrastructure teams have been decimated.

Elon Musk says Twitter handles “engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended” and there will be no more warnings

Elon Musk's Twitter has a new rule for everyone with an account on Twitter to follow …

However, the system is clearly (and unsurprisingly) also straining under the newfound load right. Many servers are closed to new signups, so you have to look for one that will take you, which may not be where most of your friends are. That's OK (see above), except that... 2/

Q&A with Mastodon founder and lead developer Eugen Rochko on how decentralized social media servers mitigate hateful speech, why he built the service, and more

As Twitter changed hands at the end of October, another very similar social media site was experiencing something of an influx.

I've been using Mastodon for a couple days now. A couple (nonexpert) observations The system as a whole functions. The major servers (that you're likely to sign up for) federate with each other, which means you can, in principle, follow and be followed just about anywhere. 1/

So apparently everyone (whether part of the layoff or not) is physically locked out of all Twitter facilities (through tomorrow?) What happens if there's an operational emergency right now, like a fire or massive data center failure?

Twitter begins laying off staff, sending a “Your Role at Twitter” email to their company account for those staying and personal account for those leaving

Employees said the layoffs came across teams, as Twitter broadly reduced its workforce.

If the idea is that “celebrities” (who are only a fraction of verified users) can afford to pay, that makes about as much sense as charging celebrities extra to be seen eating at your restaurant.

Sources: Twitter could make Twitter Blue a $20/month subscription that verifies users; staff have until November 7 to build the feature or face being fired

Now that he owns Twitter, Elon Musk has given employees their first ultimatum: Meet his deadline to introduce paid verification on Twitter or pack up and leave.

If this is true, it makes little sense, at least for me. I get almost no benefit from being verified (except making it easier for people to detect occasional fake accounts that use my name). Verifying accounts (which they should do more of) benefits the service as whole. https://twitter.com/...

@evacide A particularly frustrating aspect of this story is the framing of “Facebook complied with a warrant” vs “Facebook had data to turn over in the first place”.

I've not yet had the chance to play with the forthcoming iPhone “lockdown” mode, but it appears to be a well thought out set of countermeasures to a very specific set of threats. The challenge will be explaining what it does - and doesn't - protect against.

Securing communication and data on the Internet is *hard*. That's why there are so many criminal data breaches and other spectacular security failures. End-to-end encryption is one of the few tools we have that actually works well. Please don't take it away.

Leaked proposal: the European Union plans to release a draft law this week that requires tech companies to scan for CSAM and threatens end-to-end encryption

Brussels is bracing for one of its biggest and most emotional tech fights yet as companies face stringent new rules to clamp down on sexual abuse material.

This is utterly exhausting. We keep having the same conversation over and over, and they keep hoping the basic science will magically change. Child sexual abuse material is *bad*. Everyone agrees on that. But that doesn't mean magic solutions can be made to exist.

This current proposal is EU-specific. But variations on this same non-workable idea keep getting shopped around internationally. There's a reason nothing has actually been adopted.

Sigh. If they want to allow end-to-end encryption, as they claim, then providers *can't* access the content. That's how end-to-end encryption works. If they can, it's not end-to-end (and it's inherently more complex and less secure). https://twitter.com/...

If you want to say “We think the Internet should be even less secure than it currently is”, go ahead and say that, but be prepared for people to, um, disagree. And that's what they're saying here.
