I know a lot of people (so many people) that are skeptical about AI, and chalk up any statement from the CEO of foundation model company as hyperbolic or fodder for fundraising.  But I tend to believe them, especially when I see them make claims that will be verifiable in less than a year. …

Sam Altman says “we are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it” and that OpenAI is turning its focus to superintelligence

The second birthday of ChatGPT was only a little over a month ago, and now we have transitioned into the next paradigm of models that can do complex reasoning.

Something OpenAI has realized in a way no other foundation model lab has is that your model can be amazing, superhuman even, but if it's not packaged into a product people can use it might as well not exist.  ChatGPT supporting Apple Notes is worth far more to people than 100 more points on LMSYS.

A nail in the coffin for people who kept saying “Threads will never federate” no matter how much evidence there was against that hypothesis.  I posted this a few days after Threads launched, and I still firmly believe that federating is a big advantage for Meta.

Threads users can now follow fediverse accounts that have interacted with a Threads post; users won't see fediverse posts in feeds, but will on account profiles

Talk about having zero shame.  When it comes to AI startups, Perplexity feels like the worst of the bunch.  Maybe they're just the ones with the worst messaging strategy, but either way their CEO would probably benefit from buying a muzzle.  —  RE: https://www.threads.net/...

We prototyped this feature at Twitter, which made sense because that was an actual realtime social network.  What's the point of having a status indicator when you post things here and they only get fanned out 24-48 hours later?

People who have been using o1 for less than 24 hours are saying they don't see how it's better than Claude, without a hint of irony.  You can't learn how good a model is in less than a day, especially one that is supposed to be used in a fundamentally different manner.

If Apple does unveil some sort of chat bot functionality at WWDC24 I wonder if they'd plop it right into iMessage.  Both to use inside of a chat with friends, but also a special chat or type of chat that you can message to ask something like “what's the score of the Mets game”, taking advantage of the prime real estate bundled onto every iOS device.
