fav email of FTC vs Meta so far — sheryl sandberg asking Mark Zuckerberg how to play settlers of catan in between a discussion about buying instagram

Wall Street Journal

Sources: Meta offered $450M in late March to settle the FTC's antitrust case and raised its offer to ~$1B as the trial neared; the FTC had demanded $30B

The FTC wanted $30 billion to drop its case.  Zuckerberg offered much less and hoped Trump would back him up.

FTC v. Meta: in an email, Mark Zuckerberg considered spinning off Instagram in 2018 as he increasingly became concerned that its success was hurting Facebook

meaning show people more ads — as a way to make more money and take some pressure off Facebook  —  Perhaps not surprisingly, IG's founders left the company a few months after all o...

when twitter was growing up it was the place all the twitter employees hung out and tweeted and often defended the company/each other now history repeats as the meta employees seem to be doing that on threads (and, as far as i can see, treat twitter as a lurking ground) “eat your own dogfood” and all that, but still funny

Meta says Threads had 35M new signups since November 1 and is now going on three months of 1M+ million signups per day; Threads had 275M+ MAUs in Q3 2024

- Bluesky said last week it now has more than 20 million users. … - According to the new data, another 20 million new signups have been added in the past 11 days.

i think the other thing i would say about the whole threads bluesky thing is that all of this feels very up in the air to me just as threads had a ton of momentum out of the gate, so does bluesky (albeit at very, very different scales) i dont think short-term matters as much as longevity and health of the network.  you want people to keep coming back beyond the enthusiasm of the “protest download” and that means developing community over time.  which is hard for anyone, big or small.

this sort of thing is why it's fun from a sort of digital anthropological standpoint to look at threads — hard to start a new social network these days and have it stick, but bc this instantly scaled we are seeing all the years people spent figuring out growth hacks across FB, YouTube, IG etc being instantly applied here the result is a bunch of garbage. …
