It is both true that Ant made this outcome more likely with the memo and that that doesn't justify the supply chain risk designation whatsoever. Nothing does - it's totally insane. Horrible day for law and order, American AI competitiveness, national security, etc.

The US DOD says it has “officially informed Anthropic leadership the company and its products are deemed a supply chain risk, effective immediately”

The Pentagon said it has formally notified Anthropic PBC that it's determined the company and its products pose a risk to the US supply chain …

I am still hopeful that, per my original prediction, they will prevail in court, but this is just completely unnecessary and is such a black pill re: working with this government that I don't know how you can undo the damage.

I'm not super surprised — I've said before that Anthropic has too much of their identity wrapped up in “OAI bad” — but this memo doesn't look great IMO

In light of what external lawyers and the Pentagon are saying, OpenAI employees' default assumption here should unfortunately be that OpenAI caved + framed it as not caving, and screwed Anthropic while framing it as helping them. Hope that is wrong + they get evidence otherwise

I'm sure the Pentagon meeting was a challenge to prepare for, but given where things landed, this was an easy decision. The people facing the harder decision this week are execs at other companies who should have made their views clear, and mostly didn't.

President Trump calls Anthropic a “radical left, woke company” and says he is directing every federal agency in the US to stop using its products

The Trump administration has decided to blacklist Anthropic in the most consequential and controversial policy decision to date …

To be clear, while I support Anthropic's decision, I also think some people are going a bit overboard in praising Dario/Anthropic for bravery here... It'd be pretty catastrophic for their retention/hiring to cave on this now (which is good! Yay staff caring about their impact!).

Dario Amodei says Anthropic cannot “in good conscience” accede to DOD's request to remove safeguards and will work to ensure a smooth transition if offboarded

I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries.

This does not sound like conclusive evidence that they are in fact going to go that direction. Could also just be assessing the potential damage of a supply chain risk designation (which would be major). https://x.com/...

Best guess (low confidence) is that Anthropic doesn't back down, wins in court eventually a la Palantir/Army lawsuit while being (quietly) cheered on/helped by other companies who know they're next, and national security suffers needlessly in the interim
