Ratelimits are a very normal and powerful tool to use against spam. But if the ratelimits are *anywhere* near low enough to affect the experience of any human user, it's pretty clear signal that you're concentrating your efforts in the wrong place

Twitter says unverified accounts will have daily limits on the number of direct messages they can send, as part of changes to reduce spam in DMs

It looks like Elon Musk really wants users to pay for Twitter Blue. … In another controversial change, Twitter will restrict the number …

GREAT move by Twitter. Love it. Some questions about the incentive structure (especially re: ragebait) but at first glance this is a massively good idea, and it feels good to finally not have to pick apart all the ways something they're doing is terrible https://techcrunch.com/...

Twitter starts paying Twitter Blue creators who earned 5M+ impressions per month for three months a revenue cut from the ads beside the replies to their tweets

Creators can now make money on Twitter.  My take 👇 … Bluesky: David Chen / @davechen.bsky.social : If this story is to be believed (big if.  Huge if), then literally just spending ...

TL;DR - Bluesky is an *incomplete* beta. It's fun, and the community is great, but the company has a HUGE amount of important (and difficult) work to do before they can be a viable global competitor to Twitter. By the time they're ready, the hype may have died off.

Bluesky, which has 55K+ users, feels absolutely wild, with the CEO asking users to stop calling posts “skeets”, a struggle to establish norms, and lots of nudes

and hundreds—of thousands for invites to Bluesky is that a comprehensive report about it from someone who has spent time there has not yet been issued. That changes right now. @sam...

Backing away from a bad decision is a good decision. I'm a harsh critic of most of the policies of the current ownership, but this at least is a good one and I hope they open it back up even more. Open APIs enable galaxies worth of utility for your users, end of story https://twitter.com/...

Twitter's decision to shut off its free API caused more than a few problems for public institutions that depend on the functionality …

Bluesky, which has ~55,000 users, feels absolutely wild, highlighted by the CEO pleading to stop “skeets” and increasingly weird struggles over norms and vibes

Early last week, barely anyone had heard of Bluesky.  On Wednesday, it was just one of many alternatives vying …

God damn it. This is the one thing you cannot mess up... Real people will be hurt by this. Hurt badly in ways you can't just gloss over with emphatic words. https://www.wired.com/...

I've seen a lot of people asking “why does everyone think Twitter is doomed?” As an SRE and sysadmin with 10+ years of industry experience, I wanted to write up a few scenarios that are real threats to the integrity of the bird site over the coming weeks.
