I'm not going to get too far into it, but you should all be on the side of the Zhengzhou Foxconn workers and leaning on @Apple to smack some sense into their suppliers. You can have closed-loop management without abusing your workers.

Foxconn offers ~$1,400 payouts to newly recruited Chinese workers who opt to leave its iPhone factory, aiming to quell unrest after violent clashes with police

Apple supplier apologises for ‘technical error’ after violent clashes between workers and police

This is one of those very rare situations where foreigners really can make a difference in China. Tag @Apple, they can fix this with a phone call to Foxconn. Make them know their customers will hold them accountable for the outcome if they don't🙏

Most Chinese I know, including me, agree with this. Foxconn mismanaged closed loop, but the real problem is how they treated the workers. Most important is all Chinese are on the side of the workers, so if the government is heavy handed with them, it will be very bad. https://twitter.com/...

If nothing else Mastodon is introducing people into the whole Open Source tradition of trying to be enthusiastic about something really bad that doesn't work at all because you don't want to be rude to the maintainers and the thing you really want to use doesn't work anymore.

FUCK YEAH MEITUAN'S GONNA GET DRAGGED I'm not one to get too patriotic (with good reason) but the fact I can be sure big companies who pull shit like this are gonna get what's coming to them sooner rather than later is pretty damn nice. https://www.wsj.com/... The skeptic in me says this is reputation management but it's certainly the best behavior we've seen out of @SignalApp in while so I'm inclined to be charitable and applaud the spirit of the maneuver even if I'm a little unconvinced of the motivation👏🏻👏 🏻👏🏻 https://twitter.com/...

Good news for sex workers- they can claim everything is a DeepFake. I think if any decent pornographic ones of me were released I'd use chaff countermeasures and release thousands of low-quality ones via bot to obfuscate plausible ones in search results. https://twitter.com/...
