Utah's bills restricting kids' social media use have galling civil liberties concerns and hazy enforcement plans, and will likely face constitutional challenges

I feel like @CaseyNewton's interview with a Facebook employee and this interview with @karaswisher about Zuckerberg offers a good diagnostic of FB: A company that is radically hierarchical, that wants to think of themselves as radically horizontal. https://nymag.com/...

While whistleblowing and accountability journalism are useful, only sweeping political changes can limit Facebook's power, which has proven enduring

Amid years of ongoing crisis, Facebook in recent weeks has faced the public-relations equivalent of nuclear annihilation.

Wow, there are some really incredible details in @Klonick's new piece for @NewYorker on the Facebook Oversight Board https://www.newyorker.com/... https://twitter.com/...

What we want from Facebook and other platforms is not less politics but less of a distortionary effect on politics caused by an algorithmic bias toward outrage

Social networks would love to show users less political content.  Here's why that's a problem.

This is just a fantastic article. What I've been loving about @Klonick's work on this are all of the details about how Facebook, as an org, functions. Really fascinating to see how the FOB morphed and changed. https://www.newyorker.com/...

What's happening on PornHub is happening all over social media; platforms are using “verification” as a way to distinguish between sources to decrease moderation needs (or allocate resources). This acts kind of like an internal badge and can factor into things like monetization.

Pornhub says it has removed all videos from unverified accounts from its platform; the number of hosted videos dropped from 13.5M to 7.2M

More Than 10 Million Videos — From Its Site Charlie Osborne / ZDNet : Pornhub suspends over 10 million videos to eradicate illegal content Charlesarthur / The Overspill : Start Up ...

YouTube just used this system, for instance, when figuring out how to address videos on Covid (called it self-certification). Inevitably this ends up benefiting more some media and bigger creators, as well as “official sources” (platforms seem to see direct info as less biased)

Er or raw data of some sort? I dunno. Anyhoo, this kind of mediation between users through verification and certification is a big move! We are seeing more of it from almost every platform (including ones you might not expect like AirBnb and Tinder).
