Despite its vaunted “real time access to the web” and evident willingness to circumvent robots.txt, it appears that in some cases the chatbot is extrapolating what an article probably says from metadata even when it claims to be “reading” it.

Perplexity's chatbot also falsely claimed that WIRED reported that a specific police officer in California stole bikes out of someone's garage. (We didn't report that because he didn't do it.)

In addition to doing what it says it isn't, it also isn't doing what it is. We set up a honeypot site and asked the “answer engine” to summarize it; without even attempting to access it, it spit out a story about a girl following a trail of glowing mushrooms in the forest.

New from me and @dmehro.bsky.social: Despite claiming it isn't, Perplexity, the billion dollar AI search startup Forbes has accused of plagiarism, is scraping websites, including WIRED, from which developers have tried to block its crawlers.
