The Week That Followed
The DoD document was deleted within hours, but the signal was clear. Two days later, on February 15, Axios reported that the Pentagon was considering severing its relationship with Anthropic over the company's insistence on maintaining safety guardrails — specifically its refusal to build systems for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons targeting. By February 16, a senior official said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was "close" to designating Anthropic a "security concern," which would cut it off from military contracts entirely.
The company's response was to keep shipping. On February 17, Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 4.6 with a million-token context window. It opened an office in Bengaluru, its second in Asia. It partnered with Figma on Code to Canvas. It signed Infosys as an enterprise partner.
And then, on February 18, The Information reported the number that puts everything in context.
The Arithmetic of Principle
Consider the position Anthropic has built for itself. A company valued at $380 billion just committed to spending $180 billion it does not yet have — more than 12 times its current annual revenue — on infrastructure alone. It raised $30 billion to fund this, but $30 billion is a down payment on $180 billion, not a solution.
That gap has to close. Revenue has to grow roughly another 4x beyond current trajectory just to cover infrastructure costs — before salaries, before research, before the $20 million super PAC donations, before everything else a company does.
And this is where the Pentagon story becomes more than a political footnote. The US military is one of the largest potential customers for AI systems. Anthropic just told the Pentagon it won't build the products the Pentagon wants to buy. That's not a hypothetical revenue hit. It's a real one, chosen deliberately, by a company that needs every dollar of revenue it can find.
What the Pentagon Missed
The DoD document — the one published and then deleted on February 13 — reportedly added Anthropic to a list of companies with potential ties to Chinese military. The accusation appears to stem from Anthropic's investors, not its operations. GIC, which led the $30 billion round, is Singapore's sovereign wealth fund. The Pentagon's response to a safety-focused American AI company receiving Singaporean money was to briefly categorize it alongside actual security threats.
The deletion suggests someone realized this was absurd. But the sequence is revealing. The Pentagon's frustration with Anthropic isn't really about China. It's about control. The military wants AI companies that will build what the military asks for. Anthropic said no. The Chinese military list was a pressure tactic. The "security concern" designation threat was another.
The Liddell Appointment
Buried in the same day's news: Anthropic added Chris Liddell to its board. Liddell is a former Microsoft and GM executive who served in the Trump White House. The appointment was reported by the Wall Street Journal alongside the fundraise, almost as an afterthought.
It wasn't an afterthought. You don't add a former Trump administration official to your board the same week the Pentagon is threatening to designate you a security concern by accident. The $20 million super PAC donation, the board appointment, the simultaneous product launches — these are the moves of a company that knows the principle it's defending has a price, and is trying to pay it in every currency except the one the Pentagon is asking for.
The Dependency
The $180 billion number reveals the deepest tension. Anthropic's cloud costs flow to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft — the same companies that compete with it. Amazon is Anthropic's primary cloud provider. Google is its second. Microsoft recently became one of its top clients. Anthropic is simultaneously a customer, competitor, and dependent of the three largest technology companies on earth.
When Dario Amodei tells Dwarkesh Patel about "a country of geniuses in a data center," the data center belongs to someone else. The geniuses run on rented compute. The country pays rent to three landlords who also run competing countries.
The most principled AI company is also the most dependent. That's not a contradiction. It's the cost of the principle.
The Bet
The bet Anthropic is making is that revenue growth — currently 10x annually — will outrun the $180 billion in commitments before the commitments come due. That the Pentagon's pressure will fade or be overcome through political channels (hence the super PAC, hence the board appointment). That Amazon, Google, and Microsoft will continue to provide infrastructure to a competitor because the revenue from Anthropic's cloud spending exceeds the competitive threat from Anthropic's products.
Every piece of this bet requires the same thing: that Anthropic's technology is good enough that customers, investors, and infrastructure providers all conclude they need Anthropic more than Anthropic needs them. The product has to be the leverage.
